The Ladder School
Walsall
The Ladder school is an alternative provision free school for 11 to 16 year olds in Walsall town centre.
The Brief
A new building was required to create a much improved learning environment for new and exisiting students of The Ladder School. Unanimous planning consent was granted at committee for the school to be built on a town centre brownfield site, previously a local mill which burned down in 2007.
The Design
Design development of The Ladder school focused on the layout of the buildings and was informed by the social and behavioural needs of the students. The site posed challenging existing levels and tight constraints for the education facility. Robust fabric performance and complex security provisions were achieved within the Department for Education PSB framework.
