Sheffield Teaching Hospitals Cystic Fibrosis Unit

The Brief

Race Cottam worked closely with Sheffield Teaching Hospitals to develop a concept for a new type of in-patient facility to help make lengthy hospital stays more comfortable. The new unit ensures patients choose to come to Sheffield for their treatment.

The Design

Each of the 12 single, en-suite bedrooms in the refurbishment has a different theme, from New York Loft to Zen Garden. The boutique hotel style has been continued with a refreshing colour scheme and bespoke fitted furniture, which disguises the medical equipment to give a less clinical appearance. As well as plasma screen televisions, laptops and Wii’s in each room, the unit benefits from an exercise suite, a kitchen, assisted bathroom and two treatment rooms.

The Outcome

Innovative use of copper ironmongery to help reduce infections makes sure the new unit sets the standard for Cystic Fibrosis treatment.
