The University of York are expanding their existing energy centre on their Campus East due to current and future expansion plans over the next 10 years.
The Brief
A new facility which will house a suite of equipment including a 2.3 mega kilowatt combined heat and power boiler (CHP) will provide the campus with efficient, clean, reliable energy. This new facility will increase the university’s resilience allowing the energy supply to both campuses to be separated, reducing the risk of both campuses losing power at the same time.

The Design
The facility has been designed to allow educational visits to be hosted by the University including tours for colleges, schools and other educational establishments. Pathways carve optimal routes around key elements of the building to areas where equipment is exposed, the CHP container itself has been designed with bespoke artwork to its perimeter so visitors can visualise the internal components and workings of the CHP plant.

The Outcome
By using offsite construction methods, the impact of construction works on the on-campus student experience was reduced, preventing distractions and disruptions.
From structural columns and beams to decorative chevron patterned sandwich panels, these elements significantly reduce construction time on site and streamline operations.
